Final preparations underway at Central Shaheed Minar ahead of Feb 21

Final preparations are underway at the Central Shaheed Minar to mark Amar Ekushey February and International Mother Language Day 2026.

Cleaning and repainting work has begun at the main monument and surrounding areas to pay tribute to the language martyrs.

On Monday afternoon. a visit to the site showed workers washing the monument and its base after clearing away dust and debris, giving it a refreshed appearance. Several sections of the structure had already received fresh coats of white paint.

Workers involved in the project told Dhaka Tribune that work on the main structure was progressing quickly. Once painting was completed, the symbolic red sun will be installed behind the monument.

A student of Lalbagh Government School and College present at the site told Dhaka Tribune, “The Shaheed Minar is cleaned once a year, but this place should be cleaned at least once every month.”

Preparations were also underway around the monument, where Bengali letters and graffiti depicting the history of the Language Movement were being created. To ensure tight security, CCTV cameras were being installed, and a temporary control room for law enforcement was being set up in the area.
