DNCC administrator Azaz removed

The government has removed Mohammad Azaz from his position as Administrator of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).

According to a gazette notification signed on Monday morning by Mahbuba Irene, joint secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives, Suraiya Akhtar Jahan, Additional Secretary of the Local Government Division, has been appointed to the post.

The notification, issued by the City Corporation-1 Wing of the ministry, stated that the appointment was made under sub-section (1) of Section 25A of the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024, and will remain effective until further notice.

It further said that the newly appointed administrator, Suraiya Akhtar Jahan, will exercise the powers and perform the duties of the Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation. She will carry out the responsibility as an additional charge alongside her current position. As per regulations, she will receive only a “duty allowance” and no other financial or ancillary benefits.

Mohammad Azaz, Chairman of the River and Delta Research Centre, was appointed as DNCC Administrator on February 12 last year. On February 1 this year, following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Sabbir Foyez issued an order imposing a travel ban on him.
