Civil Aviation and Tourism Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin on Wednesday visited 11-year-old house help, who was allegedly tourtured at the residence of recently dismissed Biman Bangladesh Airlines managing director and CEO Shafiqur Rahman, to check on her medical condition.
The adviser visited the child at Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment. During the visit, Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus called Bashir by phone to inquire about the child’s condition.
Bashir received detailed updates from doctors regarding her physical state and instructed hospital authorities to provide all necessary care. He also spoke with her family to reassure them.
Those present included an Additional Secretary of the ministry, Biman Bangladesh Airlines Managing Director Dr Humaira Sultana, Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Alam Hossain, and the hospital’s Director Dr Aminul Islam.
Addressing the victim child, Bashir said: “The Chief Adviser, Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, has personally asked me to come and see you. You have no reason to be afraid anymore; we are standing by you.”
Yunus described the abuse as “a matter of shame for the nation” and confirmed the government would bear full responsibility for her treatment and care. Bashir added, “Such cruelty towards a child is unacceptable in a civilized society. The perpetrators will receive appropriate punishment in this world and the next.” He also assured Mohona’s father, Mostafa, that he would be provided employment.
Shafiqur Rahman was arrested on February 2 over the abuse allegations. The victim was admitted to the hospital in critical condition on January 31, and the government subsequently revoked Rahman’s appointment.
