The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit of the police has arrested Ahsan Zahir Khan (50), an ‘Ehsar’ member of the banned militant organization Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), during a raid in the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area of the capital.
According to the DMP Media Wing, the arrest was made at around 7:00 pm on Sunday following a tip-off. The operation was carried out in the south-western part of the Zia Udyan Lake area under Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
CTTC sources said that Ahsan Zahir Khan is an active member of Neo-JMB. He and his absconding associates had gathered at the spot, motivated by the group’s ideology, to plan sabotage activities aimed at disrupting public safety and damaging state property.
Investigators said the arrested man and his associates maintained communication by creating groups under pseudonyms on various online platforms, including Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp and Telegram. Through these applications, they had been conducting activities to advance extremist goals and ideology.
Ahsan Zahir Khan already faces a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act filed at Fulbaria Police Station in Mymensingh district. He has been produced before a court on Monday in connection with a newly filed Anti-Terrorism Act case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
The CTTC said operations are ongoing to identify and arrest other members of the group.
