The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has urged commuters to avoid the Moghbazar rail crossing area as repair work on the railway’s fishplates has caused significant traffic disruption.
According to DMP officials, the maintenance work — part of routine railway upkeep — has restricted vehicular movement on one section of the road, creating severe congestion on surrounding routes since Monday morning.
“Traffic flow has slowed due to the repair work. The area will remain under pressure until completion,” said DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Muhammad Talebur Rahman, adding that city dwellers should use alternative routes to minimize inconvenience.
The DMP has advised drivers to take the Moghbazar–Tejgaon connecting roads, Ramna–Shantinagar–Kakrail–Malibagh route, or Hatirjheel flyover link as detours.
Traffic division sources said the area adjacent to the railway line is among the busiest in Dhaka, and even short-term maintenance often results in heavy congestion.
Railway and traffic police are coordinating efforts to finish the work quickly.
By noon, long queues of vehicles had formed around Moghbazar, Hatirjheel, and parts of Tejgaon, with pedestrians and drivers facing prolonged delays.
Residents have urged authorities to carry out such repairs during off-peak hours to minimize disruptions in one of Dhaka’s key transport corridors.
