Mugging at gunpoint in Shyamoli

Muggers in Dhaka's Shyamoli area robbed a young man not only of his money and belongings, but also forcibly stripped him of his clothes and shoes.

The entire incident was captured on CCTV, and the footage has since gone viral on social media.

The mugging took place on Friday morning, on road no 2 in Shyamoli.

According to police, three muggers on a motorcycle carried out the robbery using locally made weapons.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Imaul Haque of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station confirmed the incident to Bangla Tribune on Saturday.

According to police sources, the victim, 27-year-old Shimion, is a chemist employed at Acme Laboratories and lives in a rented flat on Shyamoli.

He was on his way to work when the mugging occurred.

OC Imaul Haque told Bangla Tribune: “Three robbers approached the victim on a motorcycle and forcibly took his bag, money, mobile phone, and even stripped him of his shirt and shoes. We have collected CCTV footage and are working to identify the robbers.”

The CCTV footage shows a man walking with an umbrella when suddenly three muggers arrive from behind on a motorcycle and surround him.

Two of them, armed with sharp weapons, confront the victim directly while the third manoeuvres the motorcycle in front to block his path.

Two of the attackers were wearing helmets, while the third was shirtless. After robbing the victim of his bag and belongings, the assailants used their weapons to intimidate him and forced him to remove his shirt and shoes.

They then fled the scene on the motorcycle.

The footage has sparked outrage on social media, with users questioning how such a brazen robbery could take place in broad daylight in a busy part of the capital.

Many view the incident as a stark indicator of Dhaka’s deteriorating law and order situation, despite claims of heightened vigilance by law enforcement agencies.

OC Imaul Haque further said: “The victim, Shimion, filed a case at the police station on Saturday evening against unidentified assailants. We are actively investigating the matter and doing everything possible to apprehend the culprits swiftly.”
