Jagannath University (JnU) unit of Jatioatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) on Thursday detained a leader of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League and handed him over to the police.
The incident took place at the university’s Department of Accounting and Information Systems when the Chhatra League leader came to apply for a retake examination.
The detainee, Shariful Islam Sajid, is a student of the 2020–21 academic session and the secretary of the department’s Chhatra League unit. His family home is in Bankpara, Gopalganj Sadar.
According to reports, a case had previously been filed against him with the Sutrapur police station. He was arrested and later released on bail in February this year.
Mahmudul Hasan Khan, joint convener of the JnU unit of Chhatra Dal, said: “During the fascist regime, they brutally tortured us. We were held underground in our building for hours and tortured. The administration must ensure justice.”
Another Chhatra Dal joint convener, Hasan Sajib, said: “We received information that he had entered the campus. When we went to apprehend him, a scuffle broke out between us, him, and several of his classmates. There are four cases against him.”
Chhatra Dal leaders alleged that Sajid’s entry to the campus was premeditated. A Facebook post from an account named “Sajid Islam” made the previous day read: "From tomorrow, a group of young people will enter who have nothing to lose— no tidy room, no honour, no friends, no loved ones, no certificate. They have nothing—no fear, no shame, no emotion, no compassion. They will be fearless. They will be terrifyingly beautiful!!!”
However, Sajid denied any connection to the post, saying: “That account does not belong to me. I did not make any such post. I came today to apply for a retake exam because I won’t be able to come next week—my wedding is tomorrow.”
Professor Dr Tazammol Hoque, the university proctor, said: “Some Chhatra Dal leaders brought the Chhatra League Accounting Department secretary to our office. As there were specific allegations and a case against him, we handed him over to the police.”
