Protests are still ongoing at Nagar Bhaban demanding that BNP leader Ishraque Hossain be sworn in as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
On Sunday, Ishraque’s supporters gathered in front of Nagar Bhaban, staging a sit-in since 10:30am.
The supporters have urged the authorities to immediately abide by the court’s verdict and administer the oath to Ishraque as mayor.
They have also called for the resignation of Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain.
Earlier on Thursday, defying the rain, supporters of Ishraque held a protest in front of Nagar Bhaban under the banner of Dhakabashi and DSCC Employees’ Union.
That afternoon, Ishraque Hossain himself appeared among the demonstrators at Nagar Bhaban and addressed the protesters.
Meanwhile, the Appellate Division has said that the decision of whether Ishraque will be sworn in as the DSCC mayor lies with the Election Commission (EC).
On Thursday, a seven-member full bench of the Appellate Division led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed settled the leave-to-appeal petition related to the matter with an observation.
On that day, the Appellate Division made its observation while disposing of the petitioner’s leave-to-appeal, which sought to suspend the High Court’s verdict that dismissed a writ petition.
That writ had requested a stay on the gazette issued by the Election Commission declaring Ishraque Hossain as DSCC mayor and sought a directive to halt his oath-taking.
It is worth noting that this movement began on May 15. From the outset, Ishraque’s supporters have staged sit-ins by halting operations at Nagar Bhaban.
As a result, all administrative activities and citizen services of DSCC have been suspended, causing immense suffering to the general public.
