GC Roy Shahos, president of the Dhaka University unit of Chhatra Dal, has alleged that the administration has yet to take any visible steps to ensure justice for DU student Shahriar Alam Shammo's murder earlier this month.
“If there had been any visible action, we would not have had to gather at Shahbagh,” he said on Thursday, during a blockade at the Shahbagh and InterContinental Dhaka intersections, organised to demand justice for Shammo's murder.
Since the morning, Chhatra Dal members have been staging a sit-in protest at Shahbagh intersection.
Central leaders of Chhatra Dal, along with university and metropolitan unit activists, joined the demonstration.
Addressing journalists, Shahos said: “Had we seen any visible steps from the administration, we would not be in Shahbagh today. We are here precisely because there have been none. The university authorities have failed to ensure safety. They can never shirk responsibility for this murder. To this day, they have not been able to catch the real killer. We demand swift justice.”
He added: “Shammo was not just a Chhatra Dal activist—he was a brilliant student of Dhaka University. This is not about political identity, we are here to demand justice for a fellow student. It is not only Chhatra Dal members who are protesting—general students are also taking part.”
DU Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon said: “The interim government has failed to ensure our safety. They have yet to deliver justice for the murder of our brother Shammo. That is why we were compelled to call this protest.
“As long as Shammo, a frontline fighter of the July uprising, is denied justice and the perpetrators remain unpunished, our movement will continue.”
