Leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal staged a sit-in at the capital’s Shahbagh intersection on Thursday, demanding justice for the murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo, a Chhatra Dal leader from Dhaka University (DU).
Due to the demonstration, vehicular movement through Shahbagh was halted, causing inconvenience to the public.
Around 10am, more than a hundred activists gathered at Shahbagh under the leadership of Chhatra Dal Central President Rakibul Islam Rakib.
Chhatra Dal activists present at Shahbagh said the sit-in program will continue until 5pm.
Leaders and activists from various units of the organization were arriving to participate in the demonstration.
Speaking to the media, Rakibul said: “We have yet to receive any assurance or see any visible progress regarding the investigation into Shammo’s murder. The administration is playing hide-and-seek with us.”
On Wednesday, the DU administration issued a statement saying that three suspects have been detained in connection with Shammo’s murder.
Regarding this, Rakibul said: “The university administration said they detained three individuals but did not confirm their identities."
Chhatra Dal had announced its latest protest in a statement released on Wednesday.
It said leaders and activists of the organization would stage a sit-in from morning till 5pm in front of Shahbagh intersection and the InterContinental Dhaka to protest what it said is the negligence in the investigation into the murder of Shammo, the literary and publication affairs secretary of the Chhatra Dal’s AF Rahman Hall unit, and to demand the arrest of all accused including the main perpetrator and ensure exemplary punishment through a fair trial.
