Authorities on Friday announced that they are set to permit 19 makeshift cattle markets within the jurisdictions of Dhaka North and Dhaka South City Corporations ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
According to relevant officials, 10 of these cattle markets will be established under the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), while the remaining nine will fall under the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
Both DNCC and DSCC officials said they have already floated open tenders to lease out the designated spaces for five days. The city corporations emphasized that no makeshift cattle markets will be allowed outside the approved locations.
They urged all sellers of sacrificial animals to bring and sell their cattle only at the designated marketplaces.
“We have so far received responses from bidders for setting up seven makeshift cattle markets under our jurisdiction,” said DSCC Chief Executive Officer Dr M Zillur Rahman.
Meanwhile, DNCC Public Relations Officer Farzana Bobi said that tenders were invited for 11 cattle markets under DNCC’s jurisdiction, though the submitted documents have not yet been opened.
She noted that the cattle markets are scheduled to begin operations three days before Eid and will remain open for five days.
Officials from both city corporations assured that security measures will be in place, and leaseholders will face punitive action for any violation of the government’s guidelines.
Earlier, DNCC Administrator Mohammad Azaz stressed the importance of maintaining cleanliness and ensuring that market operations do not disrupt public roads.
Officials added that, following a court directive, the popular cattle markets at Aftabnagar and Meradia will not be permitted this year.
Under DNCC’s jurisdiction, the permanent market at Gabtoli will operate alongside temporary markets in Bosila, Mirpur, Khilkhet, and Badda.
In DSCC areas, markets will be set up at locations such as the open space of North Shahjahanpur Maitree Sangha Club and Sadek Hossain Khoka Field.
Both city corporations have pledged to ensure proper management of the markets and strict monitoring of waste disposal throughout the Eid season.
