Funeral prayer for DU student Shammo held on campus

A namaz-e-janaza or funeral prayer for Shahriar Alam Shammo, 25, a student of Dhaka University and a leader of Chhatra Dal, fatally stabbed near Suhrawardy Udyan Tuesday night, took place on Wednesday after Zuhr prayers at the university’s central mosque.

Among those in attendance were DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan, BNP Publicity Secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib, General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir, the deceased’s elder brother Anwaruzzaman Sagar, as well as faculty members, students and Chhatra Dal activists.

Following the janaza, Shammo’s body was transported to his ancestral home in Sirajganj, where a second janaza will be held prior to burial in the family graveyard, according to family sources.

Earlier, on Tuesday night around 11:30pm, Shammo was critically injured after being stabbed by unidentified assailants near Suhrawardy Udyan.

He was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the attending physician declared him dead.

Shammo was a student of the Institute of Education and Research at Dhaka University from the 2018–19 academic session and a resident of Room 222 at AF Rahman Hall.

He served as the hall Chhatra Dal’s secretary for publications.
