A man accused of making obscene gestures at a female passenger inside an autorickshaw in Dhaka’s Demra has been arrested, police said on Wednesday.
The incident took place on Monday, when a student of Siddheswari Girls' College boarded an autorickshaw from Demra Staff Quarters on her way to Barovanga, reports Bangla Tribune.
According to her Facebook post, which included two video clips, the man sitting opposite her repeatedly made inappropriate gestures during the ride.
Upon reaching her destination, the student confronted the man about his behaviour, but he reportedly denied the allegations.
Videos, which were uploaded to Facebook by the student, quickly spread across various social media platforms, prompting public outrage.
Following an investigation, police were able to identify and arrest the suspect, according to a statement posted on Bangladesh Police’s verified Facebook page.
A case has been filed against the accused.
The police further reminded the public that the Police Headquarters operates a 24-hour hotline for reporting cases of harassment or violence against women. The hotline numbers are 01320002001, 01320002002, and 01320002222.
