Police disperse students protesting for DAE chief's removal

Police on Sunday afternoon removed students protesting and expressing solidarity with officials of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Agriculture) Association who were staging a sit-in at Khamarbari, demanding the removal of DAE Director General Saiful Alam and other alleged associates of the previous regime.

Earlier, they kept the road blocked, and although the protesting officials had left the location, students were still there, reports Bangla Tribune.

Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Kaiyum said: "A team of ours is still at the scene. They left the road after 3:30pm."

Earlier, the army and police had taken positions to control the situation. Police and army personnel worked together with the agricultural officials to remove the protesters from the road.

At around 12:15pm, patrolling army and police personnel disrupted the sit-in protest. At that time, the officials participating in the sit-in were seen leaving.

However, students then took position at Khamarbari intersection and blocked traffic. The protest was led by Shahidul Islam Fahim, the Finance Secretary of Gono Odhikar Parishad and an agriculturist.

It was learned that on Thursday, the Ministry of Agriculture issued a transfer order, appointing Dr Muhammad Mahbubur Rashid, Deputy Director of DAE’s Administration and Finance Wing, as Deputy Director at Baradi Horticulture Center in Meherpur.

He was replaced by Md Muradul Hasan, Deputy Director (Imports) of the Plant Quarantine Wing. This transfer led to the unrest at Khamarbari.
