Transport workers blocked the Jonopod intersection in the capital’s Sayedabad area, protesting several demands, including the withdrawal of the decision allowing passengers to board and alight only from designated counters.
The demonstration began around 12pm on Monday, causing severe traffic congestion on the Sayedabad-Jatrabari road.
According to witnesses, transport workers started gathering at Jonopod Mor in Sayedabad from 10:30am.
Nearly a hundred workers assembled and blocked the road and commenced their protest, leading to the complete suspension of vehicular movement on the Sayedabad-Jatrabari route.
Earlier, on Thursday, an e-ticketing system and counter-based bus service were introduced in Dhaka Metropolitan City.
In the initial phase, 2,610 buses from 21 companies began operating on various routes along the Gazipur-Dhaka corridor.
All buses were uniformly painted pink.
The service was first launched in Uttara’s Azampur at an inauguration ceremony organized by the Dhaka Road Transport Owners' Association, where Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sazzat Ali officiated the opening.
It was announced that buses entering Dhaka via different routes would gradually transition to a counter-based system in four phases.
These include buses arriving from Gazipur-Abdullahpur, Manikganj-Dhamrai-Savar, Basila-Mohammadpur and Mirpur.
The implementation will commence with buses operating from Abdullahpur, for which 100 buses have already been painted pink and equipped with e-ticketing facilities.
