The body of Eden College student was recovered from a girls’ hostel in the Hazaribagh area of Dhaka.
Police retrieved the body of Pushpita Biswas, 21, at around 2am on Friday.
Saiful Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hazaribagh Police Station, said: “The hanging body of Pushpita was recovered from the ceiling fan in one of the hostel rooms. Initial investigations suggest she died by suicide, but the reason behind the act remains unknown.”
According to the police, Pushpita was a first-year honours student at Eden College and had been residing at the girls’ hostel on Hazaribagh Road.
She is believed to have tied a scarf to the fan and taken her own life in her room.
Other students noticed her hanging and alerted the hostel staff.
Pushpita was found unconscious and rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Abdul Jabbar of Hazaribagh Police Station said: “Upon receiving the report, we recovered the unconscious student from the scene. She was immediately taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she was pronounced dead by doctors.”
“Efforts to determine the cause of her death through questioning other hostel residents have been inconclusive,” he added.
He also said: “We are investigating further. The body has been sent to the morgue of Dhaka Medical College for post-mortem examination.”
