A doctor from Bangladesh Eye Hospital in Dhaka's Dhanmondi has been arrested after performing surgery on a child's right eye instead of the left.
Police arrested the doctor, Shaheda, late on Wednesday night, Dhanmondi police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ali Ahmed Masud confirmed on Thursday morning.
The child's family filed a case, following which police arrested Dr Shaheda, he said.
Earlier, the OC mentioned that legal action would be taken as soon as a formal complaint was lodged, regardless of the nature of the crime.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the hospital.
According to reports, 18-month-old Irtiza was taken to the hospital due to an issue with his left eye. The doctor identified a foreign substance in the left eye and recommended surgery. After administering anaesthesia and completing all necessary tests, the surgery commenced.
However, following the operation, the family discovered that surgery had been performed on the right eye instead of the left. The relatives have since demanded justice for the incident.
The child's uncle said: "My nephew had an issue with his left eye, but the doctor mistakenly operated on her right eye. She did not even realize the error.”
He added: “It was we who informed her that the wrong eye had been treated. Surgery was supposed to be on the left eye. The doctor then said, 'Oh my God, sorry, and took the child back into the OT to perform surgery on the left eye."
The child’s mother revealed that after the procedure, the doctor fled without issuing a discharge certificate.
