Blank shots fired in clashes between police, students near Secretariat gate

A clash erupted between police and over a hundred students from Prime Asia University near Gate 1 of the Bangladesh Secretariat on Tuesday.

The incident occurred as the students gathered to press their nine-point demands, including the establishment of a permanent campus and the resignation of the chairman of the university’s trustee board.

Around 2:30pm, the students staged a sit-in protest on the road in front of the National Press Club, where they stayed for about 30 minutes before heading towards the Ministry of Education.

According to witness accounts, a four-member delegation from the students entered the Secretariat to meet with the Education Adviser, with the meeting scheduled for 4:30pm.

Meanwhile, over a hundred students waited outside.

While waiting, the students engaged in a heated argument with the police, which escalated into clashes. Police resorted to baton charges to disperse the students and fired two blank rounds to bring the situation under control.
