A case has been filed under the Road Transport Act, 2018, by the Fire Service and Civil Defence over the death of firefighter Md Shoanur Zaman Noyon, who was killed by a truck while working to control the fire at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
The case was filed at the Shahbagh police station by Ruhul Amin Molla, who is stationed at the Fire Service headquarters. The accused in the case are the truck driver Md Belal Hossain, also known as Sumon, 36, and his assistant, Farhad Hossain, 20.
The matter was confirmed by Shahbagh police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Khalid Mansur.
According to the complaint, at around 2am on Thursday, Ruhul Amin, the complainant, arrived at the site of the fire at Building 7 of the Secretariat after receiving information from the central control room of the Fire Service.
When the fire began to spread, he sought assistance from the central control room, after which a special team from the Tejgaon Fire Station arrived to help control the fire. This team was led by Md Humayun Kabir and included eight firefighters with a minibus. Under his leadership, they began working to bring the fire under control.
While the operational work was ongoing, firefighter Md Shoanur Zaman Noyon was crossing the road in front of the main gate of the Secretariat with a delivery hose when a truck heading from Gulistan’s Zero Point towards Kawran Bazar struck him at high speed.
The truck’s reckless driving caused Noyon to sustain severe injuries, including critical head trauma and heavy bleeding. He was immediately rescued by the complainant and his colleagues, with the help of bystanders, and rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. However, the emergency department doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Following the incident, bystanders detained the truck driver Belal and his assistant Farhad along with the truck and handed them over to the on-duty police officers.
The funeral prayer for firefighter Noyon was held on Thursday afternoon at the Fire Service headquarters.
