Postgraduate doctors protest for allowance increase

Postgraduate doctors have organized a torch-lit march and protest rally demanding a minimum allowance of Tk50,000.

The Doctors' Movement for Justice held a torch procession from Dhaka Medical College to the Raju Memorial Sculpture at Dhaka University, demanding proper recognition and evaluation.

The doctors said that despite demanding an increased allowance for the past two years, no resolution has been reached.

While they demand a minimum stipend of Tk50,000, they are currently being paid Tk25,000.

They alleged that despite approval from the Directorate General of Health Services, the relevant file has been held up for unknown reasons.

The organization’s president, Dr Jabir Hossain, highlighted that while the labor law mandates a 48-hour workweek for doctors, postgraduate trainee doctors are providing services for up to 70 hours per week at various government hospitals during critical times.

Despite this, they are not receiving due recognition.

In light of this, they announced that memorandums would be submitted to all hospitals on Sunday.

Dr Hossain further warned that if their demands are not met by Tuesday, they will call on all doctors across the country to gather in Dhaka and launch a stricter protest program.
