Resident students of Dhaka University’s Jagannath Hall, a dorm for minorities, held a protest march on Monday night condemning an attack on the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in India’s Agartala and the alleged assault by some Indians at several border points.
The march began at the dorm and ended at the Raju Memorial Sculpture, where the students joined an ongoing demonstration by other DU students to denounce the attack in Agartala.
The protesters from Jagannath Hall chanted slogans such as "Resist Indian aggression," "Jagannath Hall has awakened" and "Jagannath Hall condemns border attacks."
Sarba Mitra, a Hindu student from Jagannath Hall, said: "We are all Bangladeshi. No Indian or Pakistani agents will be tolerated here. After 16 years of fascist rule, India’s conspiracies are now trying to destabilize us. Regardless of religion, we must unite to thwart such plots."
During the rally, activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, general students and Chhatra Odhikar Parishad members condemned the attack on the Bangladesh mission in Agartala.
The Hindu Sangharsh Samiti on Monday vandalized the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala, with the Bangladesh national flag taken down and set on fire, in protest of the recent arrest of Sanatani Jagaran Jote spokesperson Chinmoy Krishna Das.
Videos from the incident show protesters tearing down the Bangladesh national flag and setting it ablaze.
Later, the Bangladesh foreign ministry said it deeply resented the violent demonstration and attack, calling for immediate action and a thorough investigation into the incident.
The ministry also reminded the Indian government about the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and said it was the responsibility of the host country to protect diplomatic missions.
