JnU Chhatra Dal accused of assaulting journo

A journalist has allegedly been assaulted by Chhatra Dal leaders and activists near Jagannath University’s cafeteria while recording a fight between students.

Witnesses and the victim, Md Junayet Sheikh, who represents the daily Kaler Kantho, said the fight began over a football match between English and Mathematics department students at Dhupkhola ground on Sunday.

It continued on campus, where Chhatra Dal members attacked the journalist trying to record it and attempted to seize his phone, they added.

Earlier, the English department celebrated winning a match, reportedly leading to clashes involving around 30 injured students before teachers intervened.

CCTV footage showed Chhatra Dal’s Parag Hossain obstructing the journalist when he was recording it.

Junayet said when asked why he was filming, he revealed his identity, but attackers tried to take his phone and struck him before backing off.

The JnU Chhatra Dal general secretary intervened to stop further action.

Parag denied assault, claiming to have tried stopping violence.

JnU Chhatra Dal General Secretary Sujan Molla that they could not identify attackers from the footage and stressed good relations with journalists.

JnU Chhatra Dal President Asaduzzaman Aslam condemned any student attacks and promised disciplinary action if attackers are identified.
