Gas cylinder explosion injures five in Mirpur

Five people were burned in a gas cylinder explosion in a house in the Kafrul area of Mirpur on Sunday night during an attempt to light a gas stove. 

The explosion took place around 8:30pm. Later, around 11:30pm, the injured were rescued and admitted to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.

The injured are Rajib Mia, 21, Mosammat Sumi Akter, 18, Mosammat Shahana Akter, 22, Sumon Mia, 25, and Mosammat Suborna Akter, 22.

Dr Tariqul Islam, a resident doctor at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, said Rajib has burns on 6% of his body, Sumi on 2%, Shahana on 5%, Sumon on 3%, and Suborna on 5%.

Currently, the patients are under observation in the emergency department and are out of danger, he added.

Asadul Mondal, a neighbour who brought the injured to the hospital, said: “We are all garment workers. We all live in rented rooms on the second floor of that building in Mirpur's Kafrul area. Last night, while connecting the stove after changing the gas cylinder, an explosion occurred when attempting to light it. Many got burned while trying to put out the fire, but we managed to extinguish it quickly. Later, we took the injured to the hospital.”
