Anu Muhammad: Bahadur Shah Park can never be a commercial area

Renowned economist and former Jahangirnagar University professor Anu Muhammad has said that the traditional Bahadur Shah Park should not be commercialized in any way.

His remarks came during a discussion meeting, musical performances, and concert held to demand the cancellation of the food van canteen lease at the park.

The event was organized by the Historical Bahadur Shah Park and Heritage Preservation Sangram Parishad, the Jagannath University Band Music Association, and the Jagannath University Students Forum.

Addressing the audience as the chief guest, Anu Muhammad said: “It is unimaginable that they have turned the country into a field of plunder. The previous government even went to the extent of encroaching upon this traditional Bahadur Shah Park.”

He further emphasized the historical significance of the park, saying: “Emperor Bahadur Shah was not only an emperor but also an eminent poet. He was exiled to Rangoon by the British government due to his anti-colonial stance.”

“We have seen people of all religions visiting his grave, and many still refer to this park as Victoria Park,” he added.

Professor Muhammad called for greater awareness regarding the preservation of Bahadur Shah Park, highlighting its cultural importance.
