A student of Dhaka University’s Department of Arabic was reportedly injured Friday night when he was attacked by rickshaw pullers while trying to clear traffic near the TSC area.
Khalid Hasan, who is enrolled in the 2021-22 session, has called on all university students to gather at VC Chattar at 9:30pm and has sought media support for the incident.
Asked about the situation, DU Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed said: “Fridays and Saturdays bring heavy crowds to campus, and rickshaws tend to park anywhere, worsening the congestion. The student got into an argument with the rickshaw pullers over this issue, and when they realized he was a university student, they fled the scene.”
He added: “We must work to make the campus safe, as there are many addicts around. Many students face theft and harassment.”
On campus patrolling, the proctor said: “The TSC Student Support Unit was asked to submit a list of students for campus patrolling. They have created a list, but the initiative has not yet officially begun. Some students, however, took the initiative on their own. We have advised them to wait until they are officially briefed, trained, and given ID cards, as no one will listen to them otherwise.”
The proctor further said: “All students want a safe campus and wish to avoid unnecessary crowds, though their perspectives may vary.”
