Teen dies falling from high-rise in Chawkbazar

A teenager died after allegedly falling from a multi-storied building in Dhaka's Chawkbazar.

The deceased has been identified as Md Jibon, 18. He worked at a wholesale stationery shop.

The incident took place late Thursday night near Moulvibazar Kitchen Market.

Relatives allege that he was pushed from the seventh-floor rooftop in an act of murder. They said he was accused of stealing a mobile phone.

Jibon, the only son of the late Zakir Hossain, hailed from Dhalipara village in Naria, Shariatpur.

He had been living with his family on the seventh floor of the building in Chawkbazar.

Jibon’s uncle, Ziauddin, who brought him to the hospital, alleged that two or three days ago, a mobile phone belonging to Latif, 40, the building’s caretaker, went missing.

They suspected Jibon and accused him of theft. On Thursday, Latif, along with his son Shaon, 18, and some local people, forcibly took him to the rooftop. It is alleged that they then pushed him off the building.

Severely injured, Jibon was rescued from the ground and brought to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 1:30am, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the DMCH police outpost, confirmed the death. He said that the body had been kept in the hospital morgue and that the relevant police station has been informed.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Imran Hossain of Chawkbazar police station said that it will be determined after investigation and the autopsy report whether Jibon’s death was due to the fall or if there was another cause.
