Detectives of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police have arrested former environment minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury in Gulshan, Dhaka.
The arrest came in the evening, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed.
The police officer, however, did not disclose in which case he had been arrested.
Sources in the police said there were several cases against Saber Hossain Chowdhury.
Saber had been the lawmaker for Dhaka-9 from the Awami League since 2008, till the party’s ouster last month.
He is also a former president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
Saber served as the special envoy to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina on climate change and was also chair of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
He was the organizing secretary of the Awami League for Dhaka division from 2001 to 2008. During this time, he also held the position of political secretary to the party president and then-leader of the opposition Sheikh Hasina.
He held significant roles in government early in his political career as well.
After securing the Dhaka-6 seat in 1996, he was appointed as the state minister for shipping. He later assumed greater responsibilities as the state minister for local government.
Since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina regime, cases have been filed across Bangladesh against almost every minister and MP of the Awami League.
