Dhaka Wasa MD Taqsem A Khan resigns

Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) Managing Director Taqsem A Khan has resigned.

Taqsem, one of the most talked-about figures during former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's administration, submitted his resignation online on Wednesday, according to a source familiar with the matter.

The source said Taqsem had cited health issues as the reason for his inability to continue fulfilling his duties as MD of Wasa.

Taqsem A Khan was first appointed as the MD of Dhaka Wasa in 2009. His tenure was extended multiple times, with the most recent extension granted in August last year, allowing him to serve for an additional three years.

Questions were raised about his prolonged stay in the same position despite numerous allegations of corruption and irregularities.

Since 2009, the price of water in Dhaka increased 16 times under his leadership.

After Sheikh Hasina's resignation on August 5, Taqsem did not attend his office.

Following the fall of Hasina's government, Dhaka Wasa employees also staged protests demanding Taqsem’s immediate resignation and arrest.

It remains unclear whether he is still in the country or has left for abroad.

Taqsem A Khan, along with his wife and children, holds US citizenship, leading many to believe that he may have fled to the United States.

Currently, Dhaka Wasa’s foreign loan obligations across various projects stand at approximately Tk19,000 crore. Due to delays in project implementation and the inability to operationalize completed projects, the organization's expenses have surged.

Additionally, Taqsem's latest monthly salary as MD of Dhaka Wasa was Tk625,000.

He is also under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
