Hundreds of people were injured in clashes between the quota reform activists and police in Mirpur on Thursday.
Clashes erupted around Mirpur No 10, with quota protesters engaging in confrontations with police and Chhatra League members.
The situation escalated with ongoing chases. Police responded by using sound grenades, rubber bullets, and tear gas shells, while students retaliated by throwing bricks and stones.
Dr Fahmida Hossain, a doctor on duty at the emergency department of Dr Ajmal Hussain Hospital, said: "I have been on duty since 2pm. By 5pm, we have treated around 60-70 students. From what I understand, this number could exceed a hundred if we count from the morning. Meanwhile, a policeman also came in; we treated him and sent him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.”
She noted that most of the injuries were caused by rubber bullets. Additionally, some patients had eye injuries, head lacerations, and various cuts. Many also had bruises from being hit with sticks.
Dr Fahmida Hossain added: “No one has died here so far. However, one individual is in serious condition and is currently in our operation theatre undergoing treatment.”
