Quota reinstatement: Student dies amid clash in Savar

A student was killed in a clash with the police amid the “complete shutdown” called by the quota reform students in the Savar Bazar bus stand area on Thursday noon.

The deceased is Shaikh Ashhabul Yamin, 24, a computer science student of the Military Institute of Science and Technology (Mist).

Yamin went to the market bus stand to watch the movement after offering prayers in the Bank Town area on Thursday.

Amidst the “complete shutdown” called by the students protesting for quota reform, the police clashed with the protestors. In this clash, Shaikh Ashhabul Yamin was killed by a rubber bullet fired by the police.

Md Yusuf, in-charge of Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, said that many bullets hit him in the chest. He was brought dead to the hospital at around 3pm.

Abdullahi Kafi, additional superintendent of police (crime and ops) of Dhaka, who has been promoted to the post of superintendent of police, said that the members of the law and order forces are working day and night to protect the lives and property of all. He claimed that no one died in Savar yet.

At around 10am on Thursday, the protestors gathered in different places of Savar demanding quota reform. Later, they united and gathered hundreds of protesters at Pakiza bus stand adjacent to Savar bus stand.

At around 12pm, the protestors got involved in a clash with the policemen present in the area. At one stage, the protestors started throwing bricks at the police.

Police also fired tear shells and rubber bullets at them. The protestors dispersed and entered the surrounding streets. From there, they regrouped and started pelting bricks at the police again. Police responded by firing more tear shells and rubber bullets.

Meanwhile, the angry protesters vandalized at least two police boxes on either side of the Savar bus stand area. The windows of at least 15-20 shops along the Dhaka-Aricha highway from Thana Stand to Radio Colony were broken. Many shop owners closed their shops and left early. Several locals joined the protestors during the clashes, resulting in multiple injuries.
