DMP: Police had to fire tear gas in response to protesters' attacks

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) stated on Wednesday that they used sound grenades and tear gas in response to students throwing bricks and stones at them.

DMP Joint Commissioner (Traffic) SM Mehedi Hasan said this at TSC.on Wednesday night.

The joint commissioner said: "As per the directives of the university administration, police are maintaining security at various places in Dhaka University including the Raju Memorial Sculpture. Everything the police are doing within the university area is being done under the directives of the university administration."

When asked if the police had entered the dormitories, SM Mehedi Hasan said: "No police member has entered the dormitories. The university administration has instructed all students to leave the halls by 7pm. The general students have left, and some are still leaving. The police are assisting the students who are leaving the halls, ensuring they do so without any issues."

Regarding whether the police will be present in the area of Dhaka University at night, the joint commissioner said: "I will provide as much assistance as the university authorities request, whenever and however they want it. Any further actions will also be directed by the university administration."

Since the university has been declared closed, there is no possibility of gatherings anywhere in the university, he added.
