Torrential rain drenches Dhaka, bringing both relief and disruption

Dhaka has been drenched by heavy monsoon rain accompanied by thunder, getting a much-needed respite from the recent heat but simultaneously causing disruption across the city.

In the three hours from 6am to 9am on Friday, the capital experienced 60 millimetres of rainfall, with the weather office forecasting intermittent rain throughout the day in the city.

Dhaka's sky had remained overcast since the morning, with the rain beginning early in the day.

While many Dhaka residents welcomed the weekend rain as a relief from the heat, others faced significant inconvenience, particularly those with urgent tasks to attend to.

The rain also caused waterlogging in the city's main roads and alleys, further disrupting daily activities.

The weather office had previously issued a 48-hour rainfall warning, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Sylhet and Chittagong divisions, with a risk of landslides in some hilly areas of two divisions due to the active monsoon over Bangladesh.
