Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) continued their drive for the second consecutive day to free land from illegal encroachment built on the Ramchandrapur canal and the adjacent road in Mohammadpur.
A DNCC excavator was seen to remove the debris from the canal on Friday.
Executive Magistrate Mahbub Hossain said: “We have taken a 4-day eviction drive initiative.”
He added that if it is required to be an extension, the DNCC authority will make a further decision.
Meanwhile, cleaning work and removing debris from Sadeeq Agro were carried out on the other sheds which were not completed on the first day.
No Sadeeq Agro officials were present on the spot.
Employees were seen carrying out their daily activities including cleaning and feeding the cattle.
Asif Ahmed Sarker, councilor of Ward no 33 of DNCC, said: “When it rains heavily, places like Nobodoy and Mohammodia Housing get waterlogged.”
He said that the ward has around 15-20 direct river connection points.
“Some of the points are closed by illegal constructions. We are working to restore the canals near Beribadh to ensure the flow of rainwater,” he said.
Upon asking about the longevity of the eviction, Asif replied: “First we need to restore the canal which will take time to complete the process.”
“We plan to build a walkway here. Whenever we recover the canal we will build a walkway beside it,” he added.
According to the policy, 30 feet of the canal is a no-construction zone.
Asif said: “We are building a walkway and cycleway beside the canal for public benefit. Otherwise, we cannot hold the water flow of the canal. If there is a boundary (walkway) on the side, the middle (waterflow) will be clear.”
Evacuation and canal digging operations will resume on Saturday at 10:30am.
The DNCC on Thursday emptied and demolished illegal structures of Sadeeq Agro and adjacent establishments in Mohammadpur, Dhaka.
Parts of the farm were illegally built on the Ramchandrapur canal and the adjacent road in Mohammadpur.
In February the DNCC demolished a 10-storey building occupying Ramchandrapur canal.
Sadeeq Agro gained attention before Eid-ul-Azha by selling a goat for Tk15 lakh to Mushfiqur Rahman Ifat, son of Matiur Rahman, a high-ranking government official.
The high price sparked curiosity and controversy, making people question how an official with a basic monthly salary of Tk78,000 at his grade (grade-1) could afford such an expense.
Ifat identified Matiur as his father in some of his Facebook posts.
In a TV interview, however, Matiur denied that Ifat was his son, stating he only had two children—a son and a daughter.
Later, Feni-2 lawmaker Nizam Uddin Hazari said on a television program that Ifat was Matiur's son from his second marriage.
Over his 30-year career, Matiur has been investigated multiple times for graft by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
