Autorickshaw drivers set Mirpur traffic police box afire; pedestrian shot during clash

Protesting battery-powered autorickshaw drivers set fire to a traffic police box in Kalshi of Mirpur on Sunday afternoon.

Pallabi police station Inspector (Investigation) Mokhlesur Rahman said the demonstrators were acting violently in Kalshi. "They set fire to a traffic police box located at the Kalshi intersection."

“We are at the spot. Necessary steps are being taken in this regard,” he added.

Earlier in the day, one person was shot during a clash between police and autorickshaw drivers.

The injured, Sagar Choukdar, 25, claimed he was a pedestrian, is a tailor by profession and lives in the Lalmatia area of ​​the capital.

He said after work, in Uttara, on his way back home with a friend, he was shot near the Kalshi intersection at around 3pm.

Later, his friend took him to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital. From there, at 5:30pm, he was brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

DMCH police outpost in-charge Bachchu Mia said Sagar is undergoing treatment in the emergency department of the hospital.

Earlier, autorickshaw drivers blocked the road in Kalshi, disrupting traffic on both sides.

Earlier on Sunday morning DMP Mirpur Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Jasim Uddin Molla said following the High Court’s order, autorickshaws were stopped in the Mirpur area.

In protest, autorickshaw drivers gathered at the Mirpur 10 intersection and started protesting and stopped traffic on the road, he added.
