Child dies during circumcision, two doctors held

Police have detained two doctors following the death of a child during a circumcision procedure at a diagnostic centre in Malibagh in the capital.

The deceased is Ahnaf Tahmid Ayham, 10.

Hatirjheel police station Sub Inspector (SI) Ruhul Amin confirmed the information on Wednesday morning. The two doctors in custody are SM Muktadir and Mahbub.

Based on a complaint lodged by the child's family, the deceased Ayham was admitted to the JS Diagnostic and Medical Checkup Centre in Malibagh around 8pm on Tuesday. However, he did not regain consciousness after being administered anaesthesia for the circumcision. Despite the procedure intending to use local anaesthesia, Ayham received full anaesthesia and was declared dead within an hour.

Fakhrul Alam, Ayham's father, informed reporters that Dr Muktadir administered full anaesthesia against their instructions. He held both the hospital authorities and Dr Muktadir responsible for his son's death. A case has been filed at Hatirjheel police station.

The body has been sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.

This is the second known child death in Dhaka related to a circumcision procedure since December 31, 2023, when five-year-old Ayaan, a nursery student at a private school, died at the United Medical College Hospital in Badda.

Doctors reportedly administered excessive anaesthesia on Ayaan for the procedure without his parents' consent.
