Metro rail starts operating till night

The metro rail has started operating on Uttara North station in Dhaka to Motijheel section from morning till night, according to the new schedule on Saturday.

From now on, except Fridays, the metro rail will operate on the Uttara-Motijheel route from 7:10am to 8:40pm every day.

Those with a single journey ticket from the station will be able to travel from 7:30am to 8pm. To travel beyond this, passengers must have an MRT or Rapid Pass. The train will stop at all stations.

Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) Managing Director MAN Siddique said: “Only MRT pass, rapid pass, and holders of single journey tickets purchased before 7:45pm on the day of travel can travel on these four metro trains after hours. All ticketing offices and ticketing machines will be closed after 7:45pm.”

During peak hours (7:10am to 11:30am and 4:01pm to 8pm) the headway will be 10 minutes, and during off-peak hours (11:30am to 4pm) the headway will be 12 minutes.

After inaugurating the Bangabandhu Corner at the metro rail depot in Uttara's Diabari yesterday, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said that a survey is underway for the extension of metro rail from Uttara to Tongi in the capital.

The minister said that the construction of the extended section from Motijheel to Kamalapur will be completed in June 2025.

A decision will be taken after discussing the matter of extension of time of metro rail on various days, including Bishwa Ijtema, and Ekushey Book Fair.

Obaidul Quader said that the maximum convenience of the passengers will be ensured in the metro rail. By 2030, six lines of metro rail will be launched.

Metro trains have been running on the Uttara-Motijheel-Uttara route from 7:30am to 12pm and on the Uttara-Agargaon-Uttara route from 8:30am to 8:30pm.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the metro rail’s Uttara-Agargaon section on December 28, 2022 and the Agargaon-Motijheel portion on November 4, 2023.
