Garment workers staged a protest for a second consecutive day on Wednesday in Mirpur, leading to the closure of all traffic from Kazipara to Mirpur-14.
Besides, the Mirpur-11 metro rail station was also shut down.
Garment workers maintained their roadblock from Mirpur 1 to 11 until 11am.
The workers took position on the road from 7:30am, completely halting traffic from Mirpur 10 to Mirpur 14. Presently, they have moved away from Mirpur 10.
Traffic was unable to pass through Mirpur 10 around 11:30am.
During this time, workers were seen vandalizing some vehicles, including CNG-run autorickshaws and buses. Media personnel attempting to document the protest were also harassed by the protesters, who prevented them from taking pictures and videos on their mobile phones.
Several garment factory workers, including those from Apollo Fashion, Apollo BD, Concord, Deco Apparels, Tulip, and Azmat Fashion, are participating in the protest, advocating for a five-point demand that includes a minimum wage of Tk23,000 and controlling price hikes.
The garment workers initiated their protest for their five demands, and Alongside Mirpur in the capital, similar protests have been held in Savar and Gazipur.
A worker died in Gazipur, leading to clashes with the police on Tuesday.
Workers from areas like Mirpur 10, 14, 11, and 1 have actively engaged in this protest.
The five-point demands fuelling the worker's protest include setting the minimum wage at Tk23,000 with the basic wage constituting 65%; annual wage increases at a rate of 10% of the gross salary from the first year of the wage announcement; implementing five grades instead of seven, ensuring uniform wage raises in all grades proportionally, and assigning basic grade 3 for piece rate/sweater workers; announcing the new wage structure by November 2023 and implementing it across all garment factories from December; and introducing a factory-based rationing system and controlling inflation in commodity prices.
