Farmgate footbridge to open for commuters Sunday

The long-wished-for Farmgate footbridge is going to be inaugurated on Sunday, providing a solution for commuters in one of the capital’s busiest areas who have struggled due to its absence.

Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Md Atiqul Islam will oversee the opening ceremony scheduled to begin at 11am.

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal will attend the event as the main guest.

The Farmgate footbridge, a first for the country, was taken down to make way for the Dhaka Elevated Expressway, which partially opened on September 2.

The expressway authority undertook the task of reconstructing this bridge. The construction finished three months ago, but it has not yet been opened for public use.

Construction of the Farmgate footbridge started in May last year. This broad footbridge, built in Dhaka for the first time, cost approximately Tk20 crore.

Its design mirrors that of the parliament building.
