Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Habibur Rahman has announced a series of robust measures aimed at regulating the daily commodities market, accompanied by a stern warning against extortion and actions that might destabilize the market.
During a meeting convened at the DMP headquarters on Thursday, Habibur Rahman engaged with representatives from diverse market committees and traders.
In the meeting, he stressed the imperative need for unity and cooperation among producers, traders, and consumers to effectively oversee and govern the market.
He said: "It is paramount for all stakeholders to collaborate in managing the market and to thwart any syndicate that threatens its stability. Traders are urged to diligently maintain receipts, and consumers are encouraged to request them. Through this collective endeavor, we aspire to bring about effective regulation of the market for essential daily goods."
He made it clear that failure to provide receipts would incur penalties. Furthermore, the DMP commissioner asserted unwavering commitment to dismantling any syndicate attempting to disrupt the market, highlighting the authorities' capacity to do so.
Addressing concerns regarding extortion in the transportation of goods, he assured those present that no form of harassment or extortion would be tolerated on the streets.
He urged consumers to exercise vigilance when confronted with market rumors, emphasizing that the police force would collaborate closely with the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection to counter malpractices effectively.
In the course of the meeting, business representatives voiced their concerns, calling for an end to brokering and extortion, while emphasizing the pivotal role of a stable supply chain.
Reiterating the police's dedication to safeguarding consumer rights in market affairs, Habibur Rahman said: "Bangladesh enjoys a favorable situation compared to numerous developed nations. However, certain individuals spread baseless rumors that destabilize our market. We urge caution, and our vigilance will persist in thwarting any misconduct. The police stand firmly alongside the Consumer Directorate and the public, guaranteeing a fair market environment."
He also mentioned that the prime minister closely monitors the market situation and underscored the need for collective collaboration to ensure a stable market for daily necessities.
