Rain floods Dhaka streets, eases heat

Dhaka was drenched by monsoon rains on Friday afternoon, bringing some relief from the searing heat that the capital has been grappling with for the past few days.

The rain brought down the temperature but it also flooded several streets in the capital, especially in Old Dhaka and Naya Paltan. However, there was little in the way of traffic disruption as there were fewer vehicles on the road during the weekend.

BNP’s rally at Naya Paltan on Friday afternoon was delayed by about an hour due to the waterlogged roads.

The skies of the capital began to darken around 12 noon, and drizzles continued throughout the day.

More light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places in Rangpur, Mymensingh, Khulna and Sylhet divisions, and at a few places in Rajshahi and Dhaka divisions, with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places across the country in the next 24 hours.

According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), the monsoon depression over north Chhattisgarh and adjoining areas is moving west-northwestwards and weakening into a well-marked low-pressure area over north Chhattisgarh and northeast Madhya Pradesh-south-east Uttar Pradesh.

It is likely to weaken further and move west-northwestwards.
