Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Khandker Golam Faruq has said nine political parties, including the Awami League and the BNP, have applied for permission to hold rallies in the capital, warning that such gatherings might be banned if they create public suffering.
“We will allow some of them to hold rallies after a review,” he said on Wednesday afternoon.
"Those who obtain permission have the democratic right to hold political rallies. However, it is the duty of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police to ensure the safety of the public."
"I would urge all political parties, through the media, to refrain from inconveniencing the people of Dhaka by holding large rallies on working days and causing blockades on the streets for millions of people. Please consider changing your plans and holding meetings and rallies on holidays instead," he added.
Faruq said sticks and bags are not allowed at any rally, expressing concerns about the possibility of explosives being hidden in bags. He urged the peaceful organizing of programs without causing harm to people.
He also warned of possible future restrictions on gatherings if public discontent arises, prioritizing the well-being of the common people.
