After about three and a half hours, police managed to disperse the protesting traders of Gulshan Shopping Centre.
The traders left the road at around 3:30pm on Thursday.
During this time, several cars were vandalized by the traders, said Assistant Commissioner Abdullah Al Masum of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Gulshan Division.
“Traders blocked the road at Gulshan-1 from 12pm to protest against the closure of the shopping centre. They refused to leave the road even when we tried to talk to them several times. Later, when the police gave chase, the traders moved away from the road. After 3:30pm, the traffic in Gulshan-1 became normal,” said the assistant commissioner.
The traders complained that the executive magistrate of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) sealed the Gulshan Shopping Centre without notifying them.
They demanded some more time from the mayor of DNCC.
Earlier in the day, the traders staged a demonstration and blocked the road after a mobile court sealed off the shopping complex over safety concerns.
They took to the streets after 12pm. Due to the road blockade, severe traffic congestion was reported from Dhaka's Gulshan, Banani, and Mohakhali areas.
At that time, the officials of the city corporation had an argument with the businessmen.
