Two die in Dhaka road accident

Two people, including an American expatriate, were killed when a bus hit them in Dhaka’s Gulistan area on Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Shukur Mahmud Babul, 58, hailing from Fatullah Bhuigar village of Narayanganj, and Raisul Kabir Tushar, 35, from the capital’s west Jurain Khondokar area.

The accident occurred in front of Gulistan Trade Centre in the afternoon, said Sentu Mia, inspector of Paltan police station.

He said the two pedestrians were injured when a “Srabon transport” bus lost control and hit them.

They were taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where the on-duty doctor declared Babul dead. Later, Tushar died while undergoing treatment.

The bodies have been kept in the hospital morgue for autopsy. The deadly bus was seized following the incident, said police.

Golam Mostafa, Shukur’s brother, rushed to the spot after getting news of the tragedy.

He said Shukur had been living in the United States since 1987 and had obtained his citizenship there. “He came home from there two and a half months ago.”
