Elephant hit by train in Uttara dies

An elephant died after being hit by the Chittagong-bound Chattla Express at the Kotbari Rail Gate area in the capital's Uttara area around 2pm on Wednesday.

Dhaka Railway police station Officer-in-Charge Ferdous Ahmed Biswas said: “According to witnesses, two elephants were kept beside the railway line. At around 2pm, the Chattla Express train from Dhaka to Chittagong hit an elephant. The elephant died on the spot.”

The train stopped for about half an hour. Later, the train left the area after the elephant was removed by a crane, he added.

He further stated that a general diary has been filed. The elephant's owner is yet to be found.

The elephant's owner is yet to be found in the 60-70-foot gap between the two railway lines.

The Forest Department has been notified and action will be taken in this regard. None of the eight officers were available for comments.
