Puppet show staged to protest tree felling in Dhanmondi

The concerned citizens of Dhaka city have staged a puppet show and held a rally to protest the removal of trees on Satmosjid Road in Dhanmondi.

The rally was held on Dhanmondi Abahani field's opposite roadside from 6am to 6pm on Tuesday. Before the rally, Jal Putul Puppet Studio organized a puppet show to protest tree cutting.

Jal Putul Puppet Studio Creative Director Saiful Journal said: "The only purpose of this puppet show is to stop the authorities from cutting trees. We have been protesting since the day the tree felling started. We have repeatedly informed the mayor and his authorities about this."

"As many as 600 trees were cut down. Now only 30 to 40 trees are left. Everyone is protesting with whatever they have. We also jumped into the field with our tools," he added.

Arif Noor from Udichi artist group said: "The beauty that is being talked about by cutting down trees and creating road divisions can never be people-friendly. Why should trees be cut for development? It is either stupidity or a ploy to pick pockets. I have heard that the mayor has informally expressed his regret about this. But what has happened is irreparable damage."

Meanwhile, the speakers in the rally said: "Almost 600 trees have been cut on Dhanmondi Satmasjid road from Zigatala to Abhani playground. Development by cutting trees is not desirable in any way."

People from various professions were present at this time.
