The city of Dhaka is sizzling in scorching heat making staying outside extremely difficult for everyone.
While the temperature reading shows 40-41°C, it feels like 44-45°C.
On top of the heat, there are Dhaka's daily traffic jams, dust and loadshedding to make life harder.
Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department does not see any possibility of rain at present. There may be rain in some areas on Wednesday and Thursday, but not in the capital.
At present, there is low pressure in the Bay of Bengal. There may be heavy rain under the influence of low pressure on May 12-14. A cyclone is also predicted on May 15.
The maximum temperature in Dhaka was 41°C on Tuesday. According to the BMD's weather forecast, the temperature may drop further to 29-28°C at around 4am and 5am on Wednesday.
Labourers in the capital have to suffer the most in the scorching heat. Rickshaw pullers, bus drivers and their assistants, and hawkers are earning a living in atrocious conditions.
Bus driver Abul Hossain said driving a bus in such weather is very difficult. “Outside heat on one side, engine heat on the other side – it feels like boiling. I will live if God gives rain now,” he added.
Rickshaw puller Anis said: “Rickshaws cannot be operated in the afternoon. I have been pulling my rickshaw for several days only until noon. It is very difficult to run a family by pulling a rickshaw this way.”
Hawker Mofiz of Gulistan said: “People do not come here in summer. By noon the road is so hot, so much steam rises from the road that one cannot stand on one's own. Business is not good at this time as a result.”
According to the BMD, low pressure over East Bay and South Andaman Sea has condensed and turned into a distinct low-pressure area. It can become more concentrated. An extension of low pressure is located over West Bengal and adjoining areas.
The forecast for the next 24 hours says that the weather over the country may remain dry with temporary partly cloudy skies. However, there is a possibility of rain or thundershower at two places in Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions.
A severe heatwave is prevailing in Rajshahi, Netrokona, Khulna, Chuadanga and Kushtia and a mild to moderate heatwave is sweeping across other parts of the country.
The BMD said day and night temperatures may rise slightly across the country.
