Police looking into cause of Gulistan explosion

The cause of the explosion in a building in the capital's Gulistan area cannot be ascertained yet as no evidence was found so far.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner of Crime Department Dr K Mohiuddin said this while visiting the site on Tuesday evening.

He said the building did not collapse. However, the area around the scene has been devastated. The exact reason is difficult to say now. Police are working at the spot.

He requested everyone including journalists to keep a little distance for safety reasons and also so that police could work there.

At least 16 people were killed and more than 100 were injured in an explosion at a seven-storey building near a BRTC bus counter in the capital's Gulistan on Tuesday afternoon, with the death toll likely to increase.

Eleven firefighting units are at the scene carrying out their rescue efforts, Rashed Bin Khaled, duty officer of the fire service control room, said.
