Rozina Begum, who survived the recent Gulshan fire by jumping from the 11th floor, has described her ordeal while hospitalized.
She is now undergoing treatment at United Hospital in the capital. Doctors said that it will take some time for the pain she has in her hip, back and head to subside.
Rozina started working for the family of Fahim Sinha, director of ACME Group and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), three months ago to put food on the table.
She narrated her experience to Dhaka Tribune lying in a hospital bed late Tuesday.
Her first question was: “How is madam (Shama Rahman Sinha, Fahim Sinha's wife) now?”
She said with regret that it would have been possible to get on the elevator.

“Shama madam's mother-in-law took the child to the elevator after hearing about the fire. As we got on, the elevator load increased. So we could not get in the elevator. Later, our floor was covered in smoke. Along with Raju, Anwar and Shama Madam, we were trapped on the 11th floor. We did not get any chance to go out from the floor. At that time, the fire had completely spread to our floor.”
“Seeing this situation, I jumped into the swimming pool from the 11th floor without thinking. Later I was rescued by Fire Service members. I do not remember anything after that.”
Rozina said she survived, but the intense pain throughout her body is “more painful than death.”
At least two people were killed in a fire that broke out at the multistorey building in Gulshan on Sunday.
Several people were injured after jumping from the building.
Twenty-two people were rescued alive from different floors and the roof of the building.
