The authorities conducted special mobile courts and awareness campaigns across Dhaka city on Monday to check air and noise pollution.

A total of 15 vehicles were fined Tk51,000 and 12 institutions Tk3,85,000 for causing pollution by emitting black smoke, using hydraulic horns and keeping construction materials open.

The monitoring and enforcement wings of the Department of Environment (DoE) carried out the raids in Savar, Sabujbagh, Mirpur, Bhatara, Lalbagh and Shonir Akhra area.

Md Masud Patwari, director (enforcement) of the department, said that the monitoring and enforcement wing of the department and the district administration will continue their joint initiative to run awareness campaigns around Dhaka.

On February 1, the authorities fined different vehicles and institutions over Tk4,00,000 as well.

On that day, Md Shahab Uddin, minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, said the government would do whatever was necessary to control air pollution. “Every effort will be made to ensure that the people can live in a healthy environment,” he told reporters.

He said the government was giving importance to public awareness. At the same time, strict legal action would be taken against the polluters.
