US citizen Tala Elhendi Josephano, sister of a Jordanian-American pilot, has failed to file a case at Gulshan police station over her brother's death due to alleged wrong treatment at United Hospital in Dhaka.
The police station did not register the case when Elhendi went there around 7pm on Tuesday along with her lawyer.
Terming the incident serious, Gulshan police station Officer-in-Charge Farman Ali and Dhaka Metropolitan Police Gulshan Zone Assistant Commissioner Newton Das advised her to file a case in court.
The police officials also said that they will cooperate with her if the court asks to lodge an FIR with the police.
After staying at the police station for two and a half hours, Tala Elhendi came out at 9:30pm and complained that the police were initially willing to register the case, but after talking to the higher authorities, they expressed their inability to do so.
Elhendi alleged that the hospital authorities influenced the police not to accept the case.
The police are helping the hospital cover up her brother's murder, she claimed.
Tala Elhendi will continue her legal battle, her lawyer Barrister Mahua Morshed said on Wednesday.
Regarding the next course of action, she said: “We will discuss the next step and inform the media soon.”
Elhendi wrote in the complaint that demand was raised for revoking the licence of the hospital following a fire incident during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is clear that they are unfit for such great responsibilities of medical care. They have a past history of medical negligence.
“Therefore, I want justice for the cold-headed murder of my brother in accordance with the law in Bangladesh against United Hospital along with the cancellation of their licence,” she wrote in the complaint.
“I came to Bangladesh on January 22 and regularly went to the United Hospital. When I asked the authorities of the hospital for CCTV footage and all the medical information on the day of the incident, they kept delaying day after day and later refused to provide any information,” the deceased pilot's sister further wrote in the complaint.
“Being denied, I personally investigated and discovered the basic facts of this case,” she added.
Elhendi on Tuesday at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) alleged that her brother died due to the negligence of the United Hospital.
The pilot, Mohannad Yousef Al Hindi, fell ill after arriving in Bangladesh and was admitted on December 14 to United Hospital, where he died.
She demanded the United Hospital authorities be brought to justice for killing her brother, Yousef.
Talking to Dhaka Tribune, United Hospital on Tuesday denied Elhendi's allegations.
